The NC-44 was National’s attempt to build an inexpensive communications receiver. To cut costs, they eliminated the power transformer and went to a AC/DC circuit. It was introduced around 1940 with a retail price tag of $44.95. Even by cutting corners, the set obviously could not maintain this price. After a year or so the price was almost doubled. Those expecting National quality were disappointed. It was a good set for the money even at $80.00. However its big brothers, the HRO, 240-D, and NC-183, set a high standard that no $100.00 receiver could equal.
